Push Notifications for Auction Apps
June 15, 2026 · 6 min read
Push notifications drive bidding activity in mobile auction apps, but there’s a fine line between keeping bidders informed and burying them in alerts. AuctionWorx Mobile builds in notification controls so you can send what matters without wearing out your users.
Notifications available across all plans
Every plan tier, Buyer, Buyer + Seller, and Buyer + Seller Pro, includes the core notifications any auction house needs.
Outbid alerts tell a bidder when someone has topped their bid. It’s the notification bidders expect most: the moment a new bid lands, the system pushes an alert to the previous high bidder so they can respond right away. This one drives more repeat engagement than any other notification type.
Purchase notifications tell buyers when they’ve won a lot or completed a fixed-price purchase, with basic details on what they won and what happens next.
The admin dashboard is available on every plan, giving you visibility into app activity, and a baseline notification history tracks what’s been sent so you can review it later.
These core notifications are enough to run a functional auction without ever touching a higher plan. Plenty of regional auction houses run on Buyer or Buyer + Seller alone and serve their bidder base just fine with them.
Pro plan notifications: deeper engagement
The Buyer + Seller Pro plan adds several notification types built for more active engagement and better listing management for sellers.
Daily watchlist summaries are Pro-only. Bidders build a watchlist of lots they’re interested in, and each day they get one summary of new activity instead of a separate alert for every change. It keeps engaged bidders coming back without flooding them.
Closing soon notifications warn a bidder when a lot or listing is approaching its end time. For high-value items or competitive events, this reminder often sparks the last round of bidding, and it’s especially useful in timed events where someone is tracking several lots at once.
New event published notifications tell registered bidders when you launch a new event, so anyone who’s opted in doesn’t miss your catalog.
Bidder reminders for event closing let you send one manual notification to everyone, or just to active bidders in a given event, as it winds down. You control when these go out; they aren’t automatic.
Listing ended unsuccessfully notifications go to sellers when a listing misses its reserve or gets no bids, so they can decide whether to relist, reprice, or take another approach.
User notification preferences put the choice in bidders’ hands. They can opt in or out of specific alert types, which cuts down on uninstalls and keeps the base you do have more active. You decide which notifications stay mandatory (outbid alerts, typically) and which ones bidders can turn off themselves.
Site announcement notifications reach every app user with things like maintenance windows, schedule changes, or promotions. These aren’t bid-related, but they keep the wider bidding community informed.
Notification history on Pro covers all of the above, giving you a full record of what went out and to whom.
Managing notifications with OneSignal
We integrate with OneSignal for push notification delivery. It handles routing, scheduling, and delivery to both iOS and Android devices, and you’ll need an account to run notifications at all, something we set up with you during app configuration.
OneSignal’s dashboard lets you segment audiences, schedule sends, and check delivery reports. Once we’ve configured your OneSignal keys in the app settings, notifications are ready to go the moment your event goes live.
Keeping bidders engaged without overwhelming them
The gap between an app that drives activity and one that frustrates people usually comes down to notification strategy. A few things we recommend:
Send outbid alerts immediately. Bidders expect them and act on them fast.
Use watchlist summaries (Pro only) instead of a notification for every price change. One daily digest keeps engaged bidders informed without turning into noise.
Reserve closing soon reminders for high-value or competitive lots. Trigger one on every lot and the alerts stop meaning anything.
Let bidders control their own preferences. Someone who can turn off closing alerts but keep outbid notifications stays active. Someone who can’t turn anything off tends to just uninstall.
Think about timing. OneSignal lets you schedule around your bidders’ time zones, so an alert at 9 PM during live bidding lands better than one at 6 AM.
Test with a smaller segment before a full campaign, and check engagement before rolling out to everyone.
How this plays out in practice
Bidder preferences vary a lot. Some want every update; others want only outbid alerts. Bidders on high-value items may also want closing reminders, while casual browsers may prefer just purchase confirmations.
The Pro plan’s preference controls let each bidder set their own mix, while you set the defaults. A bidder who turns off closing reminders but keeps outbid alerts on is still an active bidder, just one managing their own alert load.
Site announcements work differently. Major schedule changes or maintenance windows justify a push to everyone, since they’re infrequent. OneSignal still lets you segment these so only people who’ve opted into that category get one.
If you’re weighing an upgrade from Buyer or Buyer + Seller to Pro specifically for the notification set, look at your engagement numbers first. Would your bidders actually use daily watchlist summaries or closing reminders? For some auction houses the core notifications cover it. For high-volume event auctions with heavy engagement, the Pro notifications can add measurable value.
Notifications and plan choice
Running a small to medium auction house with straightforward bidding? Buyer or Buyer + Seller gives you outbid and purchase alerts, which covers most of what bidders need to stay in the loop.
Pro is worth considering if you want deeper engagement tools like watchlist summaries, or if your sellers rely on listings that run continuously and need the ended-unsuccessfully alerts. Pro also includes advanced search and swipe navigation, which helps bidders find inventory faster once they’re in the app.
Not sure which tier fits?
